What it does#

The Kingfish Katana is a sword that keeps pace with a modded pack by taking the same tier kits as the machines. It attacks like any sword, and adds a lunge and an element. It comes with a Hydric Crystal already socketed, so it starts as a water katana.

Numbers#

These are Enthalpy's defaults; packs often change them.

Put a tier kit in the Kit socket and the katana's attack damage rises with it. The katana does not need repair material: Mending, Unbreaking and the anvil keep it going.

A kit's tooltip also shows its katana damage. Kits strengthen the element too: the non-damage parts of an element, such as how long it slows or burns, grow with the tier. The katana is also a little longer in reach than a normal sword.

The lunge#

Hold use to draw. A ring of water swirls round you and a whoosh marks a full draw. Let go and you dash in the direction you look, cutting everything you pass through and everything in a crescent where you stop. The lunge hits harder than an ordinary swing, then needs a few seconds before it is ready again.

  • Releasing too early does nothing. A longer draw carries you further.
  • Aiming up launches you; aiming down along the ground dashes level.
  • You get one lunge from the air between landings, so you can't chain them into flight. You can't lunge while riding or gliding.
  • It spares your allies and pets, and costs a point of durability.

Water is the nimble element: it draws faster and lunges far more often, for lighter cuts. Lightning and flame lunge less often and hit harder.

Charged swings#

An ordinary left click is a vanilla swing. When it is fully charged (the cooldown bar is full), it carries the socketed element, as does every lunge cut. Quick, uncharged swings and the sweep hits around a target do not. Elements says what each element does.

Extendable Blade#

The Style socket takes an Extendable Blade. Empty, the katana keeps the lunge. With the blade fitted, right-click releases an immediate ranged elemental attack instead, with no charging, while you stay where you are. Left clicks are unchanged. Each cast costs a point of durability and starts its own cooldown.

  • Water: a flurry of pointed pressure thrusts in quick succession from the middle and to either side, tracking your aim as you turn. It has the shortest cooldown and soaks the target in slowing and rooting.
  • Lightning: a single thrust at the nearest enemy on its line that then chains to several others near it. It suits crowds.
  • Flame: an overhead sweep that advances along a wide corridor in front of you and crashes at its far end. It has the longest cooldown and sets enemies alight without breaking blocks.

The attacks reach a good way ahead but stop at the first solid block. Allies and you are never hit. The blade trades the lunge's mobility for reach.

Sockets#

Open the sockets with Shift + right-click. The katana has three: Crystal (the element), Kit (the tier) and Style (lunge or Extendable Blade). Each can be changed or emptied at any time, and changing one leaves the others alone. See Weapon sockets.

Enchantments#

The katana counts as a sword, so it takes everything a sword takes, Sharpness, Fire Aspect and Sweeping Edge included. Sharpness and its kin apply to lunge cuts and extended attacks as well. See Enchantments.
