What it does#
The Kerf Mill saws wood. A log goes in; planks and
Sawdust come out. It gets more planks from a log than the crafting grid does,
and the sawdust is a bonus that burns as fuel.
A worked example: one
Oak Log becomes six
Oak Planks and some sawdust, against four planks from the crafting grid.

Using it#
Put logs in the input slot. Planks collect in the output slot and sawdust in the byproduct slot. The example shows a Kerf Mill with a Manifold fitted, so it saws three stacks at once.

- Any log into 6 planks and sawdust
- Works with modded wood automatically
- Sawdust burns as fuel
- 1The machine's buffer of FE.
- 2Running while any lane is sawing. Idle with nothing to saw or no room for the result; Disabled when redstone has switched it off.
- 3The power the machine is drawing right now, across every lane that is working.
- 4The input slot of the first lane. It takes logs, wood blocks and the other things the mill has a recipe for.
- 5The planks output of the first lane. Each lane has its own.
- 6The sawdust slot, shared by every lane.
- 7The progress arrow of a lane. It fills from the bottom.
- 8With two or more lanes open, Balance lanes spreads the input stacks evenly across them.
- 9Which faces take items and which give them out. Click a face to change it; right-click to go back.
Every log works#
You do not need a recipe for each kind of wood. When the game loads, Enthalpy looks at every item tagged as a log and finds the planks its crafting recipe makes. The mill then saws that log into one and a half times as many planks, plus one sawdust. Modded wood joins in on its own, as long as it has a log-to-planks recipe. Logs, stripped logs and the all-bark wood blocks are all covered. Here is one of them:

The sawdust always drops from a log; you do not need to count on a chance.

Out of the box every face takes items and gives items:
Every face Input & Output (takes items and gives items). Auto-input off, Auto-output off.
Feed logs in by hopper or pipe and pull planks and sawdust from any face. Turn on Auto-input or Auto-output to work with neighbouring chests. Side configuration explains faces, modes and redstone control for every machine.
Upgrades#
A tier kit makes the machine faster, enlarges its buffer and opens module slots. Power use below is per lane while it works.
| Tier | Kit | Power use | Buffer | Module slots |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Base | None | 20 FE/t | 20,000 FE | 0 |
| Tempered | 40 FE/t | 40,000 FE | 2 | |
| Fortified | 60 FE/t | 80,000 FE | 4 | |
| Luminous | 80 FE/t | 160,000 FE | 6 | |
| Harmonic | 120 FE/t | 320,000 FE | 8 |
Celerity Module · up to 8
Economizer Module · up to 8
Manifold Module · up to 2
Three modules matter to a processing machine:
- Celerity speeds the work up by 50% each, but every operation costs 50% more energy.
- Economizer divides the energy each operation costs and grows the buffer by the same factor, one step per module of 50%. It does not change the speed.
- Manifold opens two more lanes each, so the machine works on several items at once. Every extra lane draws its own power.
Four Celerity modules give 3× the speed, at 3× the energy per operation, so the machine draws 9× the power while it works. Four Economizers cut each operation to 33% of its energy at the same speed. With the defaults, equal numbers of Celerity and Economizer modules cancel on cost: you get the speed and pay the original energy per operation.
Good to know#
- Its running sound is a low hum. Turn it off with Sounds on the Configuration tab.
- A full sawdust slot stops every lane, even though the sawdust is a bonus. Burn it, or pipe it away.
- The mill works from the crafting recipes at load, so a datapack that changes a log's planks changes what the mill gives.
For pack makers: the settings behind these numbers
| Setting | Default | Range | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
machines.energyPerTick | 20 | 1 to no limit | FE per tick a processing machine spends while working, before upgrades |
machines.energyCapacity | 20,000 | 1 to no limit | Energy buffer of processing machines before upgrades, in FE |
machines.maxEnergyInput | 1,000 | 1 to no limit | Maximum FE per tick a processing machine accepts before upgrades |
upgrades.rateMultipliers | 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 6 | Energy rate (and therefore speed) multiplier per tier: base, tempered, fortified, luminous, harmonic | |
upgrades.capacityMultipliers | 1 / 2 / 4 / 8 / 16 | Energy buffer and transfer multiplier per tier: base, tempered, fortified, luminous, harmonic | |
upgrades.celeritySpeedBonus | 0.5 | 0 to 100 | Extra speed per Celerity module (0.5 = +50%) |
upgrades.celerityCostIncrease | 0.5 | 0 to 100 | Extra energy per operation per Celerity module (0.5 = +50%) |
upgrades.economizerEfficiency | 0.5 | 0 to 100 | Each Economizer module divides energy per operation by (1 + this), and grows the energy buffer by the same factor. With the defaults, equal numbers of Celerity and Economizer modules cancel out exactly. |
Authored recipes are datapack files of the enthalpy:kerf_mill type. The log recipes are built when recipes load, from every item in the minecraft:logs tag that has a single-log crafting recipe for planks.
