What it does#
The Salt Pan is the first step of the salt chain. Fill it with a bucket of water, put a heat source under it, and the water boils off and leaves a
Salt Block. It needs no power and has no screen: you read its state by looking at it, or in Jade.
Salt blocks melt into molten salt in the Vortex Separator, and molten salt grows the crystals in the
Brine Accretor. A block also crafts into four
Salt if you want the dust.

Using it#
- Place the pan with a heat source directly under it.
- Fill it with water: use a water bucket on it, or pipe water in. It takes 1,000 mB, and won't start until it is full.
- Wait. The water level drops as the salt builds up under it, and it steams and bubbles while it boils.
- Take the salt block out by hand, or with a hopper or pipe from the pan's single output slot.
The pan takes no more water until you remove the salt, and it refuses any fluid that is not water. If nothing hot is underneath, it simply waits full of water.
Heat sources#
The block directly under the pan sets how fast it boils.
| Under the pan | Boils dry in |
|---|---|
| A lava source block | 5 s |
| 10 s | |
| A lit campfire (or soul campfire) | 15 s |
Flowing lava does not count, and an unlit campfire gives no heat. Lava is fastest, but a campfire is the safe choice for a first salt block.
Good to know#
- With Mekanism installed, the pan's salt block can be Mekanism's instead of ours; either works in the Vortex Separator.
- With Jade installed, looking at the pan shows its water level, boil progress or a prompt when it has no heat.
- JEI lists one recipe per heat source, with the boil time.
