Prized fish

Now and then a bred fish comes out with an enchantment shimmer and "Prized" in its name. A Prized fish is the same species as its parents with two extra uses: it lifts the yields of the Ecotone row it breeds in, and it grinds into three times its resource.

Getting one#

Any fish bred in a Spawning Basin or an Ecotone has a 1% chance of being Prized, about one in 100. That covers copies and new mutations alike. Only bred fish are ever Prized.

Prized fish do not breed Prized fish. Their young are always ordinary, so you cannot grow a Prized line. You rely on the odds: a busy farm turns them up over time, and rarer species turn them up less often because they are bred less often.

In an Ecotone#

Each Prized parent in a row gives that row's resource yield a 50% chance of being doubled. A Prized fish pairs with an ordinary fish of its own species, and it does not need a Prized partner.

A worked example with Ferric Cod. An ordinary pair that yields an iron nugget gives one. With one Prized parent, half of those yields are two nuggets, so the average is 1.5 times the usual. With two Prized parents every yield is doubled.

• The bonus stacks with the Infusion Module and with Fish Meal in the feed slot. Each is rolled separately.
• It changes how much a yield is worth, not how often a fish yields or copies itself.
• It applies only to the row the Prized fish sits in. Other rows are unaffected.

The shimmer shows in the tank, so you can see it from the front of the Ecotone.

Grinding for triple#

A Triturator grinds a Prized fish into three times its main product. A Prized Ferric Cod gives 9 iron nuggets instead of 3, and its Fish Meal is unchanged. The Mekanism crusher and the Vortex Separator treat a Prized fish as an ordinary one.

When there is no room#

A Prized fish that is born into a full output is never lost, but it may lose its shimmer.

• In an Ecotone it goes into the row's fish output. If that cannot take it, it tries the resource output. If neither can, it arrives as an ordinary fish.
• In a Spawning Basin it goes into the first output with room, and if none has, it arrives ordinary.

Prized fish stack only with other Prized fish of the same species, so they sit in their own slot. Fired from a Haddock Howitzer, a Prized fish also hits harder than an ordinary one.
