Most fish come from the Spawning Basin. Soaked fish do not. You make them by throwing a cod into a fluid, and they exist only when the mod that provides the fluid is installed. They turn a fluid you would pipe in from elsewhere into a farm that makes it for you.

How soaking works#

  1. Find or place a source block of the fluid in the world: a still, full block of it, not a flowing one, and not a fluid inside a tank.
  2. Drop a Raw Cod into the block as an item.
  3. Wait about 5 s. The fluid disappears, the cod is used up and the soaked fish pops out in its place.

5 s
  • One cod soaks up one block. A stack of cod soaks one at a time, so give each its own source block.
  • The soak is timed on the item. If the cod floats or is picked up before it finishes, the timer starts again.
  • Only cod soaks, and the soaked fish have no mutation recipe in the Basin.

With JEI, the Fish Soaking page lists these recipes under "Thrown into a source block".

Each is an ordinary resource fish after the soak. A pair breeds in an Ecotone like any other: 11.11% of the time they make another fish, and otherwise they have a 50% chance of a glob. You need two, so soak two cod.

Back into fluid#

A glob separates into 100 mB of the fluid in a Vortex Separator, which pumps it out as a fluid you can pipe.

A worked example. Soaking one cod uses up a source block and gives a fish; once the fish is farming, each pair keeps making globs without further source blocks. So one block of latex starts a line that makes latex for as long as the Ecotone runs. Grinding a soaked fish in a Triturator gives 2 globs and a Fish Meal, but grinding spends the fish; farming it does not.
