Every machine and engine has a side panel that sets, face by face, what goes in and what comes out. Once you have set it, pipes, hoppers and neighbouring machines just work.

The machine seen from the front, with its other five faces around it. Click a face to change its mode; right-click to go back.

Faces are relative to the front#

Faces are named from the machine's point of view: Front is the side with its window or coil, and Left and Right are as you face it. Turn the machine with the Calibration Tablet and its settings turn with it, so a line you have set up keeps working whichever way it points. The U, D, L, R and B on the panel are Up, Down, Left, Right and Back.

The four modes#

  • Input: takes things in. Items, fluids or FE pushed into this face are accepted; nothing leaves through it.
  • Output: gives things out. Products, fluids or FE can be pulled from this face, and auto-output pushes through it.
  • Both: input and output at once, handy for a single pipe that does everything.
  • Disabled: the face does nothing, so a pipe beside it can't connect.

What a face carries depends on the machine: a processing machine's inputs take ingredients and its outputs give products; an engine's inputs take fuel and its outputs push FE; a Voltaic Cell's faces move FE in and out.

Auto-input and auto-output#

Both live on the Configuration tab.

  • Auto-output pushes products, fluids or FE out of every output face into whatever is beside it: a chest, a pipe, another machine.
  • Auto-input pulls ingredients or fuel in through input faces from inventories beside them.

With both on, two machines side by side can pass items between them with no pipes at all.

Redstone control#

Also on the Configuration tab: Always runs regardless of redstone, Low runs only without a signal, and High runs only with one. A machine switched off by redstone shows Disabled in its header.

Exceptions#

  • The Ecotone has no side panel; it uses ports on the faces of its structure, set with a wrench.
  • The Aquifer only makes water, so its faces are either Output or Disabled.
  • The Salt Pan and Tank Hatch have no screen or side panel.

Good to know#

  • Sneak and use the Calibration Tablet to pick a machine up. It keeps its side settings, upgrades and stored energy; its inventory drops.
  • Wrenches from other mods work the same way as the Calibration Tablet.
