Your first hour

By the end of this you'll have power, a Triturator grinding ore, and a Resistive Kiln smelting what it makes: several ingots from each iron ore instead of one.

1. Make a Calibration Tablet.

   It turns and picks up machines, and you'll want it from the start.

2. Make Machine Chassis.

   Every machine is built around one, so make one for each machine you build.

3. Build a Caloric Engine.

   It burns anything a furnace burns. Place it, put coal in it, and it starts making 40 FE/t. One coal runs it for 75 s.

4. Build a Triturator against the engine's front.

   An engine pushes power out of its front only, so place the Triturator touching that face (the side with the coil; use the Tablet to turn the engine if needed).

5. Grind iron ore.

   Put iron ore in. Each ore grinds into two raw iron, and sometimes a little gravel:

   Then grind the raw iron. Each one becomes two iron dust:

6. Smelt the dust.

   Each dust smelts into an ingot, in a furnace or better, in a Resistive Kiln. That's four ingots from one ore.

   The Kiln needs power too. An engine powers only what its front touches, so build a second engine for it, or link them with your pack's FE cables.

7. Make them a line.

   Grinding takes two passes, so a hands-off line uses two Triturators: the first grinds ore into raw iron, the second raw iron into dust, then the Kiln smelts it. Place them in a row and turn on Auto-output on each one's Configuration tab, so each pushes into the next; end with a chest. (Don't feed raw iron straight to the Kiln: it would smelt one ingot from each, not two.)

8. Fit your first tier kit.

   A Tempered kit doubles a machine's speed and opens two module slots. Use it on the Triturator.

What you built#

An engine, a grinder and a smelter that turn each iron ore into four ingots, which is enough metal to start everything else. The same chain works for gold and copper, and for other mods' ores by their tags (see Processing ores).
