What it does#

The Spawning Basin is where new species come from. Put in a pair of fish and some fish food, and it breeds them. Add a catalyst and each breeding has a chance to mutate instead, giving you a new kind of fish. A pair of Raw Cod with an Iron Nugget as the catalyst becomes, every so often, a Ferric Cod: the first step towards an iron farm.

It only ever holds one pair and never yields resources itself, so it is a lab, not a farm. Once you have two of a new species, move them to an Ecotone to farm them.

Building it#

Spawning BasinCrafting Table

Place any glass block on top of it. That glass becomes the tank the pair swims in; without it the screen says Needs glass on top. Break the Basin and the glass comes back as it was.

  • Breeds a pair of fish; needs a glass block on top as its tank
  • A pair breeds every 10s, or every 40s without a catalyst; resource fish only sometimes make another
  • Each breeding eats one fish food: wheat, carrots, potatoes, beetroot or Fish Meal
  • A catalyst lets the pair mutate into a new species; JEI shows what each needs
  • Some mutations cross two different fish, which only breed with their catalyst
  • Holds 1,000 mB of water and uses 5 mB/t and FE while breeding
  • Bred fish stack up in its 3 outputs; output faces let them out
  • Tier kits speed up breeding
  • Mutated fish yield resources in an Ecotone
  • Glowstone dust lights its tank; sneak-use empty-handed to take it out
Side ConfigInputOutputBothNone
  1. 1
Its water tank. Fill it with a bucket or a pipe; it uses a little while breeding.
  2. 2
The pair. Two of the same fish breed; two different fish only breed when a mutation crosses them.
  3. 3
Fish food: wheat, carrots, potatoes, beetroot or Fish Meal. One is eaten each breeding.
  4. 4
The catalyst. It's only used up when a mutation succeeds.
  5. 5
    Progress to the next breeding.
  6. 6
The young land here, in three outputs.
  7. 7
What it's doing, or exactly what it's waiting for.

How a breeding goes#

Every 10 s at the base tier it eats one fish food and breeds once:

  1. If a mutation matches the pair and its catalyst is in the slot, it rolls that mutation's chance. On a success you get the new fish and the catalyst is used up.
  2. Otherwise a same-species pair breeds another of itself. Base-game fish always do; resource fish only some of the time (each species' page gives the chance), so a pair can't simply be copied forever.

Whenever no mutation is ready to roll (no catalyst in, or a pair that has no mutation at all) the Basin still breeds copies, but at 25% speed for the same FE and water, and the screen says so. To copy fish quickly, an Ecotone is the better place. A mixed pair (say a Ferric Cod with a Cupric Salmon) only breeds while the catalyst of a mutation that crosses them is in, and only has young when that mutation comes up.

Some packs gate a mutation behind a tier kit; then the header names the kit it needs. Enthalpy's own mutations don't use this.

Automation#

Every face Input & Output (both). Auto-input off, Auto-output off.

Pipe food and catalysts in and the young out, and a Basin will grind through a rare mutation on its own. Side configuration explains faces and modes.

Upgrades#

It takes a tier kit, and no modules. Each tier breeds faster, and spends FE and water to match:

Good to know#

  • It waits rather than breeds if the young wouldn't fit in its outputs.
  • Any fish it breeds, copy or mutation, can come out Prized.
  • Use glowstone dust on it to light the tank; sneak and use it with an empty hand to take the glowstone back.
