Reaction Vat
Reacts two fluids and a catalyst into one fluid. It needs a cauldron on top and takes no upgrades.

What it does#
The Reaction Vat mixes two fluids, with a catalyst item, into a new fluid, and sometimes leaves a
solid byproduct behind. Its one job today is biodiesel: plant oil and ethanol, with a piece of
Fish Meal, make a fuel that is worth more in an
Ignition Engine than either ingredient alone.
Any fluid tagged as plant oil works, which includes the vegetable oil from seeds and the fish oil from fish, both made in the Vortex Separator. The ethanol comes from the Distiller.
Building it#
Crafting Table

It needs a cauldron on top to run. Place one and the Vat turns it into its own tall vat with the output showing inside. Pipes on that cauldron can drain the output.
Using it#
Pipe the two fluids in and put the catalyst in its slot. The header reads Needs a cauldron until the cauldron is on top.

2- Reacts two fluids into one; needs a cauldron on top, which it sets into itself
- 100 mB vegetable oil + 50 mB ethanol + 1 fish meal make 150 mB biodiesel
- Each batch has a 25% chance to leave Glycerin, which works as gunpowder
- Fluids go in through input faces; biodiesel comes out of output faces
- Pipes can also drain biodiesel from the cauldron
- 1The power buffer. Each batch takes a fixed amount of FE.
- 2Running while a reaction is in progress. Idle when a tank is short, the catalyst is missing, power is short or the output has no room.
- 3The first input tank, with a purple border. Each fluid goes to whichever input tank its recipes use, so you do not choose.
- 4The second input tank. In the biodiesel recipe this is the ethanol.
- 5The catalyst slot. One catalyst is used up by each batch.
- 6Fills as the batch reacts.
- 7The output tank. A full tank pauses the machine until you drain it.
- 8The bonus output: the byproduct of a batch, when it appears. It stacks until you take it, and a full slot pauses the machine unless you void it.
- 9Void bonus destroys byproducts instead of keeping them, so a full byproduct slot never blocks the Vat. Void Tanks empties the two input tanks (Input) or the output tank (Output) on the spot. It cannot be undone.
- 10Which faces take fluids and catalysts, and which give the product.

25%Glycerin works as gunpowder, so the byproduct is worth keeping if you need it. Turn on Void bonus if you do not.
Automation#
Every face is open by default:
Every face Input & Output (takes fluids and catalysts, gives products). Auto-input off, Auto-output off.
Fluids on an input face are sorted into the right input tank by what they are, so one pipe can carry both. Catalysts go in with a hopper, and the byproduct comes out the same way. Output faces drain the output tank only. Auto-output pushes the fluid and the byproduct into neighbours. Side configuration explains faces, modes and redstone control for every machine.
Upgrades#
It takes no tier kits or modules.
Good to know#
- It sets an empty cauldron into its own vat on its own. Empty a cauldron that has water in it first.
- A wrong fluid can fill a tank and block the recipe. Void Tanks clears it without breaking anything.
- Both inputs are used up per batch in the amounts in the recipe, so a tank that is only part full will wait.
For pack makers: the settings behind these numbers
| Setting | Default | Range | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
machines.energyPerTick | 20 | 1 to no limit | FE per tick a processing machine spends while working, before upgrades |
machines.energyCapacity | 20,000 | 1 to no limit | Energy buffer of processing machines before upgrades, in FE |
machines.maxEnergyInput | 1,000 | 1 to no limit | Maximum FE per tick a processing machine accepts before upgrades |
Its recipes are datapack recipes of the enthalpy:reaction_vat type: two sized fluid
ingredients (a fluid or a fluid tag), an optional catalyst, a result fluid, an energy cost and an optional
byproduct with a chance. Plant oil is the c:plantoil tag and ethanol the c:ethanol tag.
