Fish products
What you get from fish besides their resources: Fish Meal, fish oil, cooked fish with short effects, and the Mekanism crusher route.
A fish is worth more than the resource it yields. Any fish can be ground into
Fish Meal, pressed into fish oil or cooked and eaten.
Fish Meal#
The Triturator grinds fish into Fish Meal. How much depends on the fish:
- A resource fish gives its resource and one Fish Meal, every time.
- A vanilla fish and the
Candlefish have no resource, so they give two Fish Meal.

2The Vortex Separator also gives Fish Meal as a byproduct when it presses fish into oil, at 50% of the time.
What it does#
- Bone meal. Fish Meal fertilises crops exactly as bone meal does.
- Fish food. A Spawning Basin eats one food per breeding, and Fish Meal counts alongside wheat, carrots, potatoes and beetroot.
- Ecotone feed. Put it in the Ecotone's meal slot. Each Fish Meal feeds 1.5 breedings, and while a breeding is fed, each resource yield has a 50% chance of being doubled.
- Crafting. It is the base of the
Kelp Module, and the catalyst in the Reaction Vat that makes biodiesel.
A worked example. One cod ground in a Triturator gives 2 Fish Meal, which feeds 3 breedings. A cod farm grinding its young therefore keeps several resource farms fed.
Fish oil#
The Vortex Separator presses any raw fish into fish oil, with a chance of Fish Meal. Which recipe applies depends on the fish, and no fish matches more than one:
- Lean fish are any raw fish not listed below, including fish from other mods.
- Oily fish are raw salmon and these fish:
Ancient Coelacanth,
Brassback Snapper,
Bronze Bream,
Constance Carp,
Cupric Salmon,
End Steel Eelpout,
Slick Eel,
Sooty Char,
Steelhead. - The Candlefish gives the most oil of all.

100 mBThe Candlefish is bred from a pair of salmon with an Oil Glob as the catalyst (species page). It never yields a resource and breeds copies of itself like a vanilla fish, so a Candlefish Ecotone is an oil farm.
What oil is for#
Fish oil counts as a plant oil. It burns in an Ignition Engine for 100,000 FE a bucket, and it is the oil input of the biodiesel recipe, which burns for 400,000 FE a bucket. Fuel chains compares the routes.
Cooked fish#
Every bred fish cooks in a furnace, a smoker or on a campfire into a cooked version. Each restores 5 hunger and the usual saturation, and a few themed fish also grant a short effect when eaten. The effect is shown in the item's tooltip, because the game does not list food effects itself.
| Cooked fish | Effect | Lasts |

Every other cooked fish is plain food. The alloy fish have no effects by design. The Purpur Boxfish's levitation is a joke: it is over before you have gone anywhere.
With Mekanism#
With Mekanism installed, a Mekanism crusher also grinds fish into their resources. A crusher has a single output, so you get the resource count without any Fish Meal.

3Crusher recipes exist for every fish whose resource Mekanism can output, using Mekanism's own nuggets where the resource is a metal. Fish whose resource comes from another mod crush into that mod's item, and only when both mods are loaded. These fish have no crusher recipe and stay with the Triturator:
Amber Tetra,
Bauxite Barb,
Brassback Snapper,
Constance Carp,
Ironclad Trout,
Nickeled Pike,
Platinate Sturgeon,
Sterling Smelt,
Zincfin.
A Prized fish gets no bonus in the crusher; see Prized fish.
